양/수를 나타내는 다양한 표현들 1 <A number of/The number of>

A number of, the number of.

이 두 표현들은 관사 하나만 다르고 나머진 다 똑같기 때문에 많이들 헷갈려 하실 수 있습니다. (물론 저도 그랬다는건 안비밀!)

이 두 표현의 차이를 이해하는 것이 매우 중요한데요, 그 이유는 A number of냐 The number of냐에 따라서 동사의 수일치를 달리 해야한다는 것입니다.

지금부터 이 둘이 어떻게 다른지, 문장에선 어떻게 쓰이는지함께 살펴볼까요??

1) A number of + 복수명사

A number of는 흔히 문법 책에서 '많은'이라고 번역하고 있습니다. 하지만 영영사전을 찾아보니 many랑 동일한 뜻은 아니더라구요.  2개 이상이므로 양은 좀 있긴 하지만 많지는 않다는 뜻으로 이해하시면 될 것 같습니다. 

A number of + 복수명사에서 A number of는 복수명사가 좀 있다, 몇개가 있다.라는 뜻이기 때문에

이 phrase는 복수취급을 해줍니다.

▶의미 : 얼마간의, 몇개의, several, more than two but fewer than many)
2개 이상이므로 양은 좀 있긴 하지만 많지는 않은

▶복수취급

◎Example

-A number of people(복수명사) are(복수취급) waiting for the bus.
*A number of people is waiting for the bus.
몇몇 사람들이 버스를 기다린다.

-A number of teachers attend(복수취급) the seminar.
*A number of teachers attends the semiar.
몇몇 선생님들이 세미나에 참석한다.

※ A number of는 다양한 양적 표현을 위해 다양한 수식어들이 들어갈 수 있습니다. 

▶'많은'을 표현하고 싶을 때

A large(great) number of / Large numbers of / quite a number of

◎Example

- A Large number of thieves are arrested.
   많은 도둑들이 체포되었다.

- Large numbers of thieves are arrested.
   많은 도둑들이 체포되었다.

- A great number of students volunteer each year for environmental projects.
  매 해마다 많은 학생들이 환경 프로젝트에 지원한다.

- She recommended quiate a number of books to me.
  그녀는 많은 책들을 나에게 추천해주었다.

▶'적은'을 표현하고 싶을 때
A small(tiny) number of / Small numbers of 


◎Example

-There are a small number of people in the cinema today.
 오늘은 영화관에 사람들이 많지 않은 편이다.

-Only a small number of tigers are left in the wild today.
 현재 야생 호랑이들의 수는 극소수에 불과하다.

-A tiny number of students in class would be better for learning.
한 반에 학생 수가 적은 것이 학습을 위해 더 좋을 것이다.

▶그 외 표현들
A limited number of 한정된 수의, 제한된 수의
A record number of 기록적인 수의
A growing/rising/increasing number of 점점 증가하는
A declining number of 점점 감소하는



◎Example
- They sell a limited number of products at discounted prices.
그들은 한정 수량의 상품을 할인된 가격에 판매한다.

-An increasing number of people are using iphones.
점점 더 많은 사람들이 아이폰을 사용하고 있다.

-The play closes this week after a record number of performances.
그 연극은 최장 공연을 기록하며 이번 주에 막을 내린다.

-The 21st century will see a declining number of wars because we all know how costly any major war would be.
21세기에는 우리가 어떤 큰 전쟁이 얼마나 희생이 클지를 모두 알기에 전쟁은 감소할 것이다.

2) The number of + 복수명사

The number of + 복수명사는 ~의 수 라는 뜻인데요. 이 명사구의 noun head는 수 자체(number)입니다. 즉, 10, 29와 같은 수 자체가 주어이기 때문에 the number of + 복수명사는 단수취급을 해줍니다!

▶의미 : ~의 수

◎Example

-The number of cars in Seoul(복수명사) is(단수취급) increasing rapidly.
*The number of cars in Seoul are increasing rapidly.
서울시의 자동차 수가 급속히 증가하고 있다.

-The number of women admitted to college has(단수취급) drastically increased.
*The number of women admitted to college have drastically increased.
대학 입학 허가를 받은 여성의 수는 급격하게 증가했다.

-The number of congress members declined from 382 to 372.
국회의원 수는 382명에서 372명으로 감소했다.

-In Asia, the number of left-handed people is(단수취급) very low.
*In Asia, the number of left-handed peoople are very low.
아시아에서는 왼손잡이의 수가 드뭅니다.
